Spain and Greece will face each other for the 11th time in recent years in women’s beach handball, this time in Wednesday’s September 13th (18:00-ΕRΤ Sports1) final of the 3rd Mediterranean Beach Games “Heraklion 2023”.

The two teams have given the fans great emotions and big games that were decided in the details. Spain lead 6-4 in wins in 10 meetings since 2018.

9th medal for Spain

It will be Spain’s 5th final at a major event after three at the World Championships in 2008, 2016, 2022 and the final at the 2023 European Games. They have already secured their 9th medal and are looking to win their second title, after the 2016 Worlds .

“Furias Rojas” defeated Italy 2-0 in the 1st semi-final, having leading scorer in Maria Batista Portero with 17 points.

4th final for Greece

Greece prevailed 2-0 against Portugal in the 2nd semi-final, just as it did in the premiere of the tournament. Lena Mournou was the big star was, as she scored 17 points, the last one for 25-24 in the 2nd set which came with a reversal and a 5-0 run. Elisavet Mastaka and Elina Trohidou were also excellent, scoring 14 points each, while Magda Kepesidou was once again decisive.

Greece secured its 4th medal and will compete for the 4th time in the final of a major event after the Mediterranean Coasts of Pescara (2015), Patras (2019) and the World Championships in Kazan (2018).

The coach of Greece, Maria Karantoni, said: “We are very happy. I am very proud of this team. We have gone a long way, we have all urpassed ourselves. Spain is a familiar opponent, they are better prepared than us, but still we know how to manage the game. However, whatever happens tomorrow, our goal has been achieved in this event as well”.
