The extensive programme of the impressive Beach Volleyball tournament of the 3rd Mediterranean Beach Games “Heraklion 2023” wrapped up with eight matches on Thursday September 14th.
All four Greek pairs won and secured the qualification to the quarterfinals. The men started with Kanellos / Terzoglou winning 2-0 against Bajrami / Maligi (Kosovo). Then the duo consisting of Dallas and Hatziinikolaou took their turn, who won by the same score against Kalouche (Kallouche) / Dekkiche (Dekkiche) from Algeria.
The qualification to the quarterfinals of the tournament was secured by both Greek female duos. First, Matiou / Triantafyllidi won 2-0 against the Serbian athletes (Mitrovic / Skaric) (Skaric – Mitrovic). And the… double was made by Paschalaki / Alexoglou also with 2-0, against Mahassine / Yakki from Morocco.
“We are very happy with our performance so far. We made it to the final eight by achieving our original goal. We played three matches today and now we have to rest for Friday’s quarterfinal. The tournament features good teams and the level is high,” said Elizabeth Triantafyllidi.
Myrto Paschalaki added that “we can’t believe that we are in the last eight teams. It’s the first time we participate in such a great tournament, but we showed that we have the potential for distinction. We qualified and we are very happy”.
The Croatian team (Zelenika / Skorin) and the Slovenian team (Kolaric / Klasnic) also secured qualification to the quarter-finals.
In the women’s event the Cypriot duo (Gusarova D. / Nystrom) moved on, along with the Slovenian duo (Losvin / Kotnik).
On Friday September 15th morning, the final “battle” of the tournament will begin with the quarterfinal stage matches, while the semifinals will be held in the afternoon of the same day.
